Chacko is a furniture design studio in Mumbai, founded by VIPIN JOE.
The process of design is often realised only as the finished product interacts with the world around it. However, being a witness to the process, there is an overwhelming realisation of the skills and effort of different kinds of artists, that helps to bring it to realisation. Vipin runs his studio, employing a large number of uniquely skilled artists and took us along on a journey of discovery, through every piece of furniture he created.
Commissioned for a restaurant called ATELIER BY AMBROSIA situated in Trivandrum, Kerala, each piece of artistry was created by the team at CHACKO. We got to witness as each block of wood, marble and steel, took ideas into rough shapes, and were then finished into pieces of art.
Gonzo x Chacko wanted to pay a tribute to the artisans who help mould these ideas and created 4 videos that take us on the journey of creation.

Table Inlays
Working with Chacko we learnt discovered the intricacies in the process of creation.
Shown here, the inlays on their marble top tables were cut with precision and laid with brass design elements that resonated in the design language of the space.
Wood Turning
The idea of bringing a shape to life is seen in this project. The most visual gratifying part of this shaping is when the wooden blocks were turned around on the wheel as artisans chipped away from it, slowly bringing it to pieces for its final assembly.
This film covers the wood turning blocks into the legs of the table.
Chair
Inspired from traditional Kerala architecture and borrowed from memory, the team at Chacko designed these chairs for the project. The chair was carefully scrutinised at every step of the way, to ensure the interaction of the chair with its user is the best it can be.
This film follows the process of its creation, nurtured with love, at every stage.
Brass Finishings
The carefully touches of brass across the line of furniture designed by Chacko, pays an homage to utility of brass within vernacular Indian homes. Inspired by the graceful ageing of brace, upon years of use and patina, some finishings of the furniture designed for Atelier were given the touches of brass and the this unique process was documented by Gonzo.
